Differences Between Spot Color Printing and Four-Color Printing

Differences Between Spot Color Printing and Four-Color Printing

1. Color Formation Principles and Color Effects

1). Four-color printing uses four basic inks—cyan, magenta, yellow, and black—and mixes them through halftone dots of different sizes to produce thousands of colors. The dots are visible when magnified.

2). Spot color printing uses pre-mixed specific inks, which are transferred directly as solid areas onto the substrate without halftone dot overprinting, resulting in uniform and consistent color.

3). Spot colors can achieve special effects such as metallic, fluorescent, and pearlescent colors, with a color gamut exceeding that of CMYK four-color printing.

4). Spot colors offer higher color accuracy, with color difference controllable withinΔE≤2, whereas four-color printing is usuallyΔE≤5.

2. Cost and Efficiency Comparison

1). Four-color printing requires only four printing plates. It is suitable for multi-color, complex patterns and has lower costs for small-batch orders.

2). Each additional spot color requires an extra printing plate, but for large-volume single solid-color printing, the unit cost is actually lower than that of four-color printing.

3). Spot color printing has a simple process and fast press startup, making it suitable for large-volume routine orders.

3. Application Scenarios and Selection Recommendations

1). Four-color printing is suitable for printed materials with rich color gradations, such as photos, gradients, and realistic images, including brochures and promotional posters.

2). Spot color printing is suitable for products requiring brand logos, large solid background areas, and special effects, such as packaging boxes, self-adhesive labels, and book and magazine covers.

3). High-end packaging often uses a “spot color + four-color” combination: spot colors for logos to ensure color standards, and four-color for background patterns to enrich the gradations.

4). A simple way to judge: examine the printed material with a magnifying glass. If dots are visible, it is four-color printing; if no dots are visible, it is spot color printing.
